GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Mar. 3, 2014) — Temperatures flirted with record territory early Monday morning, with at least one record likely to fall in West Michigan as the day moves forward.
The temperature in Grand Rapids had dipped to -8° overnight, just shy of the record of -9° set back in 1943. Temperatures elsewhere around West Michigan were generally between -5° and -10°, although Big Rapids was as cold as -21° at 7:00 A.M.
While the record low may not end up falling Monday, it is likely to be the coldest high temperature on record this afternoon, at least in Muskegon. The record there is 18°, set in 1912. Our current forecast is for highs along the lakeshore around 15° Monday afternoon. The record for coldest high temperature in Grand Rapids is 12°, but sunshine may help us just enough to beat that.
Clouds will return Monday night, with some snow showers developing by early Tuesday morning. We may see just enough snow to cause a slick Tuesday morning commute — around an inch or so in Grand Rapids and points northward, less than that to the south.
