GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Mar. 3, 2014) — Sure, you might walk away with a free stack of buttermilk pancakes Tuesday, March 4, at IHOP, but you’ll also be given the chance to help Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

This annual event started back in 2006, according to IHOP. So how does a charity make money just for IHOP giving away pancakes?

Well, in exchange for their kind gesture, the popular breakfast chain asks that you pay it forward by leaving a donation for the designated charity. Chains nationwide have other designated charities, such as Children’s Miracle Network. The chain has raised $13 million since beginning the event.
