GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (March 6, 2014) — In true LaughFest fashion, the 10-day comedy festival began Thursday by setting a new world record for the fourth year in a row.
Hundreds of people headed to downtown Grand Rapids Thursday afternoon to don silly LaughFest shades and attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest number of people wearing sunglasses in the dark.
The previous record was set in Chicago in July 2012 at Wrigley Field with 1,642 participants.
Despite the chilly temperatures, festival-goers bundled up and danced to stay warm while waiting for the record attempt just after 7 o’clock. Organizers said the first attempt fell short by about 100 people.
A second attempt just minutes later after rallying the crowds and gathering a few more people produced just enough to beat the record. LaughFest organizers tell FOX 17 the unofficial tally was 1,693 people. The results still need to be certified to make sure the record was broken.
Previous world records set on the opening day of LaughFest include the world’s largest rubber chicken toss, and the world’s largest gathering of people wearing fake mustaches.
