gaymarriageDETROIT, Mich. — Closing arguments were delivered today in Detroit before a federal judge regarding the ban on same-sex marriage.

The case involves April DeBoer and Jayne Rouse, a lesbian couple seeking to have the ban overturned. The couple have three foster children combined. DeBoer said the ban on gay marriage prevents the couple from adopting each other’s foster children.

In 2004, 59 percent of Michigan voters approved the ban on gay marriage. DeBoer’s attorney said that constitutional amendment is “discriminatory.”

The assistant state attorney said the judge should not ignore the will of the voters, and that marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman.

If the judge overturns the law, the state assistant attorney said that’s a “clear violation of the law.”
