9.2 downtown market fish2GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (March 12, 2014) — March is not only National Reading Month but it is also National Nutrition Month. “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” is the theme this year.

If you are looking for that extra push into the right direction, the Kent County Health Department is inviting all of you to join Dietitians of West Michigan at “Taste of Health” from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 in the banquet room of the new Downtown Market, 435 Ionia Ave. SW.

At this free event, there will be cooking demonstrations, learning booths and resources.

Other ways that you can enjoy National Nutrition Month are by doing the following:

At the grocery store: Choose one new fruit, vegetable or whole grain every week. Start small by trying different versions of familiar foods.

At Home: Try new ways of cooking your old favorites! Roast potatoes instead of mashing. Steam veggies you might typically saute. Grill, broil or bake lean meat. For a quick meal prep option, saute chicken strips or pieces, then add some vegetables to create a delicious stir fry. Adults should aim for 3 cups of vegetables each day. Add some spices into your life to bring bland foods to life!

At Restaurants: Try a restaurant that features healthy, ethnic foods that may be new to you. Also, try a restaurant serving seasonally or locally grown foods because you might find a healthy twist on an old favorite.
