GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (March 15, 2014) — Nearly 1,500 authors, educators and illustrators gathered from across the country in Grand Rapids for the Michigan Reading Association conference at De Vos Place.

Attendees and speakers focused on literacy.

Organizers said that discussions on learning and how to teach students to communicate effectively through traditional writing, and new technology such as text is a big focus of the discussion.

The event features writing and teaching workshops and an awards ceremony for young writers.

The event is also getting folks focused on what Michigan has to offer.

“It is a state organization, so we are interested in doing Michigan things, such as the bi-fantastic award. That`s a Michigan award and our Michigan teachers speak here, so we`re trying to keep everybody excited about Michigan,” said Mary Howell, Michigan Reading Assoc. President.

About 200 students also participated in hands-on workshops.

The conference wraps up on Monday.
