Tigers D graphicLAKELAND, Fla. (Mar. 21, 2014) — The Red Wings aren’t the only Detroit professional sports team dealing with injuries.

The Detroit Tigers announced today that righthanded relief pitcher Bruce Rondon will undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the 2014 season. Rondon, 23,  was slated to serve as the team’s eighth-inning set-up man with Joe Nathan set as the team’s closer.

The Rondon injury is just another set back that the Tigers have dealt with this spring. Yesterday, the Tigers confirmed that shortstop Jose Iglesias is suffering from stress fractures in both of his shins and will be out four-to-six months.

Iglesias, 24, was set to be the Tigers’ shortstop this season after he was acquired from the Boston Red Sox near the trade deadline last season. Avisail Garcia was sent to the Chicago White Sox as part of the Iglesias trade.

The Tigers today acquired shortstop Andrew Romine from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Jose Alvarez. Romine, 28, appeared in a career-high 47 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013 and batted .259 with 10 RBI. He also hit .287 in 89 games with Triple-A Salt Lake City last season. Romine has also spent time playing second base and third base.

Tigers President, CEO, and General Manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Florida today that he expects Romine to split time at shortstop with either Danny Worth or Hernan Perez.
