Bjk74w4CQAAFwSwBATTLE CREEK, Mich. (March 25, 2014) — Governor Rick Snyder made a couple stops in West Michigan, just a day before the higher courts weigh in on same sex marriage in the state.

The governor was in Battle Creek, reading to first graders at Dudley Elementary school to celebrate “March is Reading Month.” After his hour-long visit, the Governor talked exclusively to FOX 17 about his role in the same sex marriage issue.

His office released a statement saying it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on these matters while the legal proceedings were still going on. He’s referring to the stay that was issued Saturday night.

“It’s just mainly just following the law,” said Governor Snyder. “That’s how I view it as. The constitutional amendment was passed long before I became governor. Now, it’s being reinterpreted by a federal judge and I just want to make sure we stay in appropriate compliance.”

When asked about the Democrats alleging the Governor protecting a cousin during budget cuts, Snyder said there was nothing to those claims.

“It’s that political season where people make up all kinds of things,” he explained. “There was a long standing business relationship as far as the state for well over a decade and the contract goes before the term, before I became governor.”
