YPSILANTI, Mich. (April 1, 2014) — Washtenaw County officials say a woman was assaulted by three men Monday after they recognized her from same-sex marriage coverage on the news.

According to MLive, the 28-year-old woman married her partner during the brief repeal of Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies told MLive the woman got off a bus at about 6 p.m. near the 3000 block of Roundtree Boulevard.  She was walking through an apartment parking lot when three men approached her.

One of them called her a homophobic slur and other derogatory remarks and asked her if she had been on the news recently, MLive reports.  That’s when police say she was attacked.

“They made some explicit comments to her about her sexual identity.  She gets hit in the face, knocked unconscious and she is shortly awakened being kicked and punched,” Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Derrick Jackson told WDIV.

No arrests have been made in the case. According to MLive, one of the men was described as heavy set, between 5 feet 10 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a low or husky voice.

No other descriptions were provided.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the anonymous tip line at Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office at 734-973-7711 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-773-2587.
