GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 2, 2014) — An 18-year-old will spend between 14 and 27 years in prison after pleading no contest to attempted murder and felony firearm charges.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office says Michael Willis Brown, a member of the Bemis Boys gang, spotted a rival gang member Aug. 14, 2013 while driving with friends in the 700 block of Oakdale Street.

They said he opened fire, and ended up hitting the other gang member’s mother, 42-year-old Senta Ashley.

Ashley testified against Brown in the trial, the prosecutor’s office said.
