HUDSONVILLE, Mich., (April 11, 2014) Nearly a dozen churches have joined together with the goal of raising enough money to buy and pack more than 285,000 meals for orphans around the world. Kurt Berens is one of several people spearheading the effort through the group “Food for Orphans“.
“Every two seconds, there’s another orphan in the world,” explained Berens. “It’s really easy, it’s really impactful, and it’s going to make a huge difference to these kids”.
Berens and the other organizers came up with the idea after attending a church retreat in Traverse City where about 40 thousand meals were packed. The group returned inspired and ready to set an even bigger goal.
“We don’t know how we’re going to get there but we kind of took the step off the ledge and said let’s do it, let’s figure it out,” Berens told FOX 17 News.
So far, about half of the group’s fundraising goal of $75,000 thousand dollars has been met. If enough money is raised, 285 thousand meals will be packed on Saturday May 3rd, enough to fill a shipping container and provide a life-saving meal to 780 orphans a day for an entire year.
Berens said the group is still looking for volunteers to take part in the “packing day” along with monetary donations.
