GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 17, 2014) — It was easy to complain about the snowfall we saw in West Michigan earlier this week, but much of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is dealing with even worse conditions that continue into Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service office in Marquette posted this note after setting another low temperature record Wednesday morning:

“FOR THE SECOND DAY IN A ROW…A LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS SET AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MARQUETTE STATION. THE LOW TEMPERATURE THIS MORNING…APRIL 16…AT THE MARQUETTE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE LOCATED IN NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP WAS 5 DEGREES BELOW ZERO…WHICH SHATTERS THE PREVIOUS RECORD LOW OF 7 SET IN 1980. THIS IS ALSO THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE RECORDED SO LATE IN THE SEASON…AND THE LATEST A SUBZERO TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN RECORDED.”

A potent storm system will continue to move through the northern Great Lakes Thursday, bringing heavy, wet snow to much of the U.P. through at least midday.  Storm totals of 10 to 12 inches will be possible across the western portions of the Upper Peninsula.

Meanwhile, West Michigan will be far enough removed from that storm to see just an increase in cloudiness for most areas Thursday.  A few places may see some limited rain showers, especially early Friday morning.
