GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 20, 2014)- The city of Grand Rapids will begin hot asphalt patching on Monday, April 21 for critical streets in the city.
The streets that will be patched have been prioritized based on traffic count, severity of disrepair, impact on the travelling public and emergency service needs. Hot asphalt patching will entail sweeping and tack coating the road, then rolling a new layer of hot asphalt to finish the grade. This type of repair is more effective than cold patch, and is meant for emergency spot repairs, not permanent improvements.
Cold patch material was used through the winter months to temporarily fill potholes until weather warmed enough to allow the use of hot asphalt patching. This year’s extremely cold temperatures resulted in an explosion of potholes throughout the City of Grand rapids.
Since March, Public Services Department crews have worked over 2,600 hours placing 190 tons of cold patch asphalt and 341 tons of recycled asphalt in potholes on City streets.
