MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (May 4, 2014) — Four Fremont teens took to the sky Saturday before their prom night.

Derk Smith said he and three friends went sightseeing for about 40 minutes before landing back at the Muskegon County Airport and heading to prom at the Fruitport Golf & Banquet Center, 6334 Harvey St. in Muskegon.

Smith, 18, said both he and his friend Adam Wyn have private pilot licenses.  Wyn was pilot and Smith was co-pilot during the Saturday flight, he added.

He said he had to log a minimum of 40 hours in the air before getting his license on April 2.  Wyn got his license late last year, Smith said.

The plane the four flew in is owned by the West Michigan Flying Club, according to Smith.  He said he and other members of the club have access to four different planes.
