Tricia Hill speaks with FOX 17’s Ann Marie LaFlamme, one day after Hill’s live-in boyfriend was stabbed to death.

ENSLEY TWP, Mich. (May 6, 2014) – A man in Newaygo County was stabbed to death in his home Monday night and now his girlfriend who says she did it is talking to FOX 17 News.

First responders tried to revive Charlie Rainey III, Sand Lake, 28, but weren’t able to.

We spoke with his live-in-girlfriend Tricia Hill who says, “It was self-defense.”

“I wasn’t aiming to kill anybody,” she told FOX 17.

She said she didn’t want to say anything else because police are still investigating.

Neighbor Carl Flynn says he spoke with the couple 20 minutes before the stabbing and everything seemed fine.  He says he never heard any arguing all day Monday or during the time Rainey was stabbed.

“He was really upbeat and he said I just love it out here,” Flynn said.  He said Rainey was a great kid who was working hard to support his family.

Rainey was burning brush to make room for a garden with Hill’s young daughter.  Flynn said he had taken a lot of pride fixing up the home he and Hill has recently bought.

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department says they interviewed two “occupants of the residence” but no arrests were made.

The case will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office for review.

Rainey’s friends and family are outraged.

“She’s right down the road, not in custody,  they didn’t even hold her for 48 hours.  Even if it was self-defense she still stabbed him to death, it just doesn’t seem right that she isn’t in custody at least for questioning,” friend Heidi Hansen said.

Hansen says Rainey had moved from Tennessee to get away from Hill and that he was scared of her.

Neither Hill nor Rainey has any violent criminal history in Michigan.
