Pothole PayoutsGRAND RAPIDS, Mich (May 7, 2014) – It’s not an election headline you often see anywhere, let alone West Michigan: Tax Overwhelmingly Approved.

But that was the case Tuesday night.

Voters in Grand Rapids went to the polls and said they wanted to renew a tax that would pay for street and sidewalk repairs.

According to a statement from the City of Grand Rapids, residents will begin to see results from Tuesday’s vote in 2015:

A systematic, data-driven asset management approach using best practices will be used throughout the city to begin to bring our street system, including sidewalks and rights-of-way, to a 70% State of Good Repair within 15 years.

In addition to the tax renewal, voters approved a charter amendment that shifts the responsibility of sidewalk repair from homeowners to the city.

Grand Rapids has more information about how the tax money will be spent on its website.
