PURE MICHIGAN BIKING TRAILSAUGATUCK, Mich. (May 15, 2014) — A new project is in the works that would create a trail system that goes around all five Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.

The trail would stretch 7,000 miles long and be used for biking, hiking, walking, kayaking, and driving. It is expected to be longer than the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail combined.

Government officials from several states and Canada will gather in Saugatuck on May 15 and 16 for the Great Lakes Coastal Trail Conference to formalize development for the project. The conference coordinator, Dr. Dave Lemberg of Western Michigan University, said the trail would be a world-class tourist destination.

At last check, there is no word on who will pay for the project if plans continue to move forward.
