car into porchGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Police and emergency crews are on the scene of a crash after a vehicle smashed into a porch on the city’s southeast side.

It happened just before 4 p.m. in the 900 block of Humbolt Street.

Witnesses said a car pulled from between two houses at the corner.  Police said the driver of a Lincoln was going at a high rate of speed before going airborne and crashing into the porch of the house.

According to police it’s unclear as to what caused the driver to crash into the house.  Amazingly the driver walked away with only a scratch and no one else was hurt.  A family of three was inside the home at the time.  FOX 17 News spoke with the husband who said he was making dinner when he heard what sounded like a bomb going off.

He said his one-year-old daughter  was knocked into her mother’s lap by the force of the impact when the car crashed into the house.  They were able to get out safely only to see the extent of the damage to not only their porch but the house as well.

“I just thought i heard a bomb explode, then I looked through the window right behind that, that’s when I saw the windows, the front window and that’s when I noticed that awning collapse,” said Colin Bengtsson.

According to police, the driver is in his 20s and doesn’t remember what happened.  Police don’t suspect that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but do say he possibly suffered a medical condition causing him to lose control of the car.  He will likely be cited for the damage.

As for the house, the owner was told it’s uninhabitable in it’s current form.
