ALLENDALE, Mich. (May 19, 2014) — Starting on May 19, law enforcement agencies across Michigan will increase enforcement zones for unbuckled drivers for the annual Click it or Ticket campaign.

Police departments, sheriffs offices, and Michigan State Police posts in 40 counties will monitor safety belt enforcement zones through the Memorial Day travel weekend. This in an increase from last year’s 26 counties.

MSP says that driver’s seat belt use declined over recent years and almost 1,000 people died last year in traffic crashes. In addition to looking for drivers who aren’t buckled up, law enforcement will also keep an eye out for drunk driving and other traffic violations.

The extra enforcement is paid for with a grant, and drivers who do not wear their seat belts on the road will face a $65 fine.
