BAY CITY, Mich (May 20, 2014) – A man who admitted to killing and burning a 4-year-old boy on a Michigan Indian reservation will be sentenced on Thursday.
In December, Anthony Bennett pled guilty to second-degree murder for the death of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain.
Chamberlain was found buried underneath a porch at his girlfriend’s home in June 2012 after an extensive search when the boy was reported missing. Chamberlain was the son of Bennett’s then-girlfriend, whom he lived with at the time of the murder.
A court filing on Monday, attorney John Shea says Bennett has taken responsibility for his actions.
Bennett’s plea agreement agrees to a prison sentence between 35 and 40 years in prison. There is possibility that Bennett could withdraw his guilty plea and head to trial should the judge choose to sentence Bennett to more than 40 years behind bars.
Bennett has a history of violent crime dating back to a 2009 assault conviction. He also assaulted a corrections officer while in custody last November.
