California Chrome Fails to Win Triple Crown

California_Chrome_Mike_Sekulich_r620x349NEW YORK (June 7, 2014) — California Chrome’s race toward history came up well short. The winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness finished out of the money at the Belmont Stakes.

Tonalist, ridden by Joel Rosario, won the Belmont Stakes. Tonalist did not run in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness. Commissioner finished second and Medal Count took third. California Chrome finished tied for fourth with Wicked Strong.

California Chrome came into today a 4-to-5 odds-on favorite to win the Belmont Stakes.

Affirmed won the last Triple Crown in 1978. Since then, 13 other horses had won the first two legs of the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness) but failed to win at the Belmont Stakes.
