WEST MICHIGAN (June 15, 2014) — While most of this weekend was stellar, and warmer, more humid active, unsettled week of weather is ahead over the next several days.

Monday is expected to be dry, but as a warm front lifts in to the state Monday night/Tuesday morning a round of showers and thunderstorms may break out. That front is then expected to stall across the region and remain the focal point for more showers and thunderstorms all week. It won’t rain all day everyday, but certainly the chance for several rounds of showers and storms are there.

In fact, once the front departs the region and upper level low pressure system will slide in behind the system and deliver the chance for more showers and storms this weekend. West Michigan will be in a risk of seeing some localized flooding from the possibility of heavy rain. Strong to severe storms are also possible but the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) at this time has no risk for Michigan at this time.

While many of us are hoping of some rain, frontal systems that get stuck over a region (parallel to the upper level flow), what meteorologists call “quasi-stationary” can have the potential of producing active, unsettled weather with heavy rain. This is especially true if the thunderstorms “train” over the same location over and over.

The attached snapshot to this story is a weather surface map valid for Tuesday morning. Note the green hatched area over the Great Lakes…the possibility of showers/storms by that time. For more maps like this check out the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) here.
