ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (June 25, 2014) – Fire crews responded to a fire at a building on Alpine Avenue Wednesday morning.

They were called to Fox Pools at 6411 Alpine Avenue, between 7 and 8 Mile Roads, just before 10 a.m.

After an assessment by a hazardous materials team, fire crews were instructed to let the building burn due to danger from materials inside.

“A lot of people in the area use well water.  They didn’t want water run off from chemicals to cause problems in system,” said FOX 17’s Deanna Falzone on the scene.  “Crews have stopped using water at this point.”

“The owners’ daughter says they just opened the retail store part seven years ago.  She says it’s devastating to watch their hard work burn,” she said.

“Starting to feel the heat from the other side of the street,” Falzone tweeted.

Smoke could be seen billowing on the north side of Grand Rapids.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of M-37 at 8 Mile Road are closed, said MDOT.

FOX 17 News has a crew on the scene.  We will bring you more shortly.
