WALKER, Mich. (June 24, 2014) — It was a question of boundaries between neighbors and a West Michigan retailer: Who is responsible for mowing the grass where a fence divides the property?

That was the question posed to the FOX 17 Problem Solvers.

Margaret Kaminski and her mom have been losing sleep, worrying about the fines they would face from the city of Walker, all because they couldn’t get to the part of the lawn that was left neglected and overgrown.

“Just had no idea how we were going to do it,” Kaminski about clearing out the overgrown weeds and grass.  “No one wanted to be hired out for this little job.”

A fence prevented access. It was put there years ago by the management of the Meijer on Alpine Avenue as a way to keep shoplifters out of the neighborhood.

Kaminski said Meijer put the fence on the property with the understanding that they would maintain it.  She said the retailer stopped holding up their end of the bargain.

Meijer said they would look into the problem. “Meijer always strives to be a good neighbor.  This situation was clearly a mistake and we are currently working with our contractors to resolve it,” said a statement from a Meijer spokesperson after the original story aired.

It was news welcomed by those stuck with notices from the City of Walker.

“It always felt like family when you walked in there,” said Kaminski.  “And I’m glad we resolved everything and can still be a community, a family.”
