Wrong-Way Driver Leads to Fatal Crash In Ottawa County

i-96CaptureNUNICA, Mich. (June 28, 2014)– Police are investigating a two-car fatal crash that happened early Saturday morning.

According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, at around 4 am Saturday morning, the Ottawa County Dispatch center received several calls of a wrong-way driver in the Eastbound lanes of I-96 near Coopersville. Police say a few minutes after the tips of a wrong-way driver came in, they were then dispatched to a head-on collision along the highway.

The crash happened around 4:10 a.m. on I-96 eastbound at the 14 mile marker just West of the 68th Ave. exit in Coopersville. 39-year-old Michael Johnson, the wrong-way driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. He ran into 22-year-old driver Mitchell Hamm, who was airlifted to the hospital. Hamm is currently listed in critical condition.

Police say that both driver’s were pinned in their cars, and were both wearing seat belts. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor to the deadly crash. As the investigation continues, we will keep bringing you updates.
