LANSING, Mich. (July 5, 2014) – Even with holiday festivities in full swing, thousands of people across the state have signed a petition indicating they have had enough of the amateur fireworks shows taking place in most neighborhoods in West Michigan.

A petition found at moveon.org is calling upon the members of the Michigan Legislature to immediately repeal the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 citing, “The safety and well-being of the citizens of Michigan” as the reason for the repeal request.

As of Saturday evening, more than 7,000 people have signed the online petition.  The author listed a goal of 7,500 signatures.

The law, signed back in 2011, allows Michiganders the freedom to buy and use fireworks that shoot up into the air.  One of the goals of the law was for the State to get its share of the money lost to neighboring states where fireworks are sold.

Some of the criticism surrounding the fireworks have to do with the noise, the pollution, and the liter caused by the explosive form of entertainment.
