Report: Pistons negotiating with Otis Smith to coach Grand Rapids Drive
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Stan Van Gundy may be turning to an old colleague to run the Grand Rapids Drive.
According to ESPN’s Mark Stein, the Pistons are in advanced negotiations with Otis Smith to become the first-ever head coach of the franchise’s NBA D-League team. The Grand Rapids Drive will begin its inaugural season in November at the Delta Plex in Walker.
Smith is the former general manager of the Orlando Magic and was with the franchise while Van Gundy was the team’s head coach. Smith stepped down as the Magic G.M. on the same day Van Gundy was relieved of his duties as head coach in 2012.
