GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Hopefully you weren’t one of those folks waiting for blistering heat and humidity to arrive in the month of August. At least over the next week or so, temperatures will gradually fall off as we enter mid month. Normal/average highs have us in the low 80s this time of year.

The graphic attached to this story is from a group of meteorologist and climatologists at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC). Their responsibility is to look ahead one week, two weeks, a month, three months at trends in the upper level jet stream that will control our weather over the longer term. CPC says there is a 40 to 50 percent chance of below normal temperatures for the Great Lakes from August 15 – 19.

This cooler temporary trend will correspond with a trough and upper level low pressure system in the jet stream over the region. The image below is from around 30,000 feet and valid Thursday morning August 14. Note the blue colors and the dip in the upper level flow over the Great Lakes and Northeast United States.

The image below also shows that we have a 40 to 50 percent chance of above normal precipitation for the same time frame. That’s great…we need the rain!

The trough and low will eventually lift out and we will start seeing warmer temperatures as we head through next weekend. Get the complete forecast at www.fox17online.com/weather.
