GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Four West Michigan food pantries are getting thousands of dollars to help the people they passionately serve.

Meijer presented three of those pantries with $10,000 a piece. They will also get a share of a grand total of $600,000. The money comes from the first ever Meijer LPGA Classic earlier this month, and Meijer’s Simply Give Program. The program lets customers donate money to their local food pantries all over the Midwest.

Food pantry directors said this couldn’t come at a better time.

“A lot of people, when they hear the word food pantry ,they don’t think about the shampoos and toothpaste and toothbrushes that we also use that we are way low on,” said  Waverly Knight, one of the directors of Northwest Food Pantry.

Waverly said she did not expect this.

“It’s amazing!”

The other food pantries were Love, Inc., United Church Outreach Food Pantry and North End Community Food Pantry.

“It’s really cool to see the whole community come together around an important issue and that’s hunger,” added Stacie Behler, group vice president of public affairs and communications with Meijer.

The Meijer LGPA Classic took place at Blythefield Country Club on August 7th through the 10th.
