COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — A day after setting a new single-season hits mark for the West Michigan Whitecaps, Wynton Bernard has been given the Midwest League’s highest honor.

The 23-year-old All-Star outfielder has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player, announced in a release Monday afternoon. Bernard is leading the MWL in hits, batting average, and runs scored. He ranks second in on-base percentage and total bases – and is tied for third in stolen bases.

An RBI single on Sunday against South Bend gave Bernard 159 hits on the season, breaking the old record set by Nick Castellanos (2011) and Robert Fick (1997).

The Whitecaps are continuing their series against the Silver Hawks tonight at 7:00 p.m.
