MUSKEGON County, Mich. -- Jordyn Garza, 18, was charged in a Muskegon County courtroom for "reckless driving causing death" and "reckless driving causing impairment."

Whitehall police said Garza was behind the wheel when he crashed a car into a utility pole and then a tree. The crash happened near Division Street and Mears Avenue in an alley in Whitehall.

Garza's cousin, 15-year-old Makaila Stever-Knapp died at the scene. A second teen remains in critical condition.

Police said five people were in the car. Two kids in the backseat got out with little assistance, according to a witness.

Speed is believed to be a main factor, according to Police Chief Roger Squiers.

Even more frightening is the fact that there are normally five to seven kids nine years and under playing on bicycles, tricycles and scooters in this same stretch of alley. Only by the grace of God were they not there when this car sped through!

Although unfortunate too many seem to pass judgement before the actual facts. Please be respectful to the family and friends of these individuals. It’s a horrible accident and only the ones that were involved know the truth. It’s bad enough that it happened, people need to understand the emotional torment if those involved. Thank you.
