WEST MICHIGAN — After a round of early morning showers and thunderstorms, a brief period of clearing will be possible early before chances for showers and thunderstorms increase. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the slight risk area to include all of lower Michigan as the potential for strong to severe weather has increased.

Early morning rain showers usually decrease chances for strong storms later in the day but partial clearing across West Michigan has allowed the atmosphere to slowly re-charge itself allowing storms to tap into a good amount of energy this afternoon, which could allow storms to strengthen and intensify.

The window for thunderstorms will be between 1 PM and 9 PM with the highest probability of severe activity taking place between 4 PM and 7 PM Saturday. Storms that develop will have the ability to intensify quickly so any one with outdoor plans needs to be weather-aware to rapidly changing conditions.

The main threat with any storms that move in will be gusty straight line winds. Winds could gust in excess of 60 mph downing trees and power lines. An isolated tornado is possible as well however remains highly unlikely.

Stay tuned to FOX17 for severe weather updates throughout the afternoon and evening.
