KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. -- FOX 17 sat down with the Kalamazoo County treasurer, Mary Balkema, to discuss the policy on delinquent property taxes.
After FOX 17 aired a story on Deb Calley, we received lots of feedback. An attorney representing another family in a similar situation came forward.
Calley lost her to the Kalamazoo County treasurer's office over one missed property tax payment. She claims she was never properly notified.
Attorney Brian Weiss emailed FOX 17 and said his clients lost a deceased relative's home to the county as well. The Haist family failed to respond to a certified letter sent to a deceased relative's property from the Kalamazoo County treasurer's office.
Weiss said the letter notified the Haists that there was one unpaid property tax bill from 2011. It was worth $2,000. They admit the oversight but were hoping to pay the bill and redeem the Pavilion Township home. They said they even offered $30,000 to the county.
The home sold at the August 18th auction for $66,000.
Again, FOX 17 sat down with the county treasurer, Mary Balkema. She discuss delinquent property taxes.
