GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Clear skies Friday evening allowed some sky-watchers in mid-Michigan to see a gorgeous view of the Northern Lights. Horace Smith snapped a beautiful photo of the green Auroras in Clinton County, Michigan shortly after 2 AM and people around West Michigan may get a few more chances this weekend.
A powerful explosion from a sunspot earlier this week sent energy surging into space, however the Earth was not in the path and missed the chance at a spectacular light show. As we head into the weekend, Earth will face the very active sunspot allowing for many northern and mid-latitude locations to see the spectacular sights of the aurora borealis.
Weather in West Michigan this weekend will make for great viewing of the celestial sky. Low humidity and clear skies will help make the aurora’s more visible to the naked eye. For the best chance to see the Northern Lights, find an open area away from lights with a full view of the horizon. The lights should appear low on the horizon in the northern sky.
