GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – One man has died after a motorcycle accident on westbound I-196, Sunday afternoon.

According to investigators, a 2007 Harley Davidson was traveling west on I-196 when the motorcycle went off of the highway and into the guard rail, throwing the operator and passenger off of the motorcycle.

Both occupants were transported to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital. The driver of the motorcycle, Douglas Deridder, a 59-year-old male from Grand Rapids, died. The passenger is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident as well as the operator was wearing a novelty helmet.

Westbound I-196 was closed for a period of time, while troopers investigated this accident.

Any witnesses, who did not speak to officers are asked to contact Trooper Cope of the Michigan State Police Rockford Post at 616-866-4411
