ROCKFORD, Mich. — It’s a sports league aimed at helping kids with dissabilities gain confidence and skills, playing a sport they might not otherwise be able to.

The West Michigan Miracle League wrapped up their baseball season on Saturday in Rockford.

The teams have been playing on  Nate Hurwitz Field. Teams have spent the past several weeks on the wheel- chair friendly field.

The West Michigan Miracle League said that playing baseball gives the kids a chance to hear their name cheered for, instead of typically sitting on the sidelines while cheering on others.

Saturday concluded the league’s third season.

The field is named after a teenager with muscular dystrophy who he died two years ago from an unrelated illness.

“Baseball was a perfect sport, and to enjoy a sport, watch and play, talk, enjoy the outdoors. It was a wonderful place and for kids to play the game that he loved so much. To watch parents seeing their kids play, to watching buddies out with their kids in the field, I think Nate would have absolutely loved this day. He would of loved just being out with everyone, having fun and enjoying baseball,” said Nate’s father, Dan Hurwitz.

The miracle league is raising money to create a while chair accessible playground, and Art Van Furniture has already donated $50,000 towards the construction.
