MARINETTE, Wis.- The future USS Detroit was christened and launched into the water for the first time on Saturday.

The boat was built by Lockheed Martin at the Marinette Marine Corporation Shipyard. The USS Detroit is the nation’s seventh Littoral Combat Ship.

The wife of U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Barbara Levin was on hand to christen the ship by smashing a champagne bottle across the ship’s bow before launch.

“These ships will help the Navy achieve its goal to increase forward presence, and can be upgraded or modified quickly to meet future missions,” said Dale P. Bennett, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Mission Systems and Training business.

The USS Detroit will continue to undergo outfitting and testing and is scheduled to delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2015.
