New Amtrak station opens in Grand Rapids on Monday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The new Vernon J. Ehlers Amtrak Station is opening to the public on Monday morning, and officials are hosting a special grand opening ceremony in honor of the launch.

The $6.1 million station, located at 440 Century Avenue SW, serves one daily round trip of Amtrak’s Grand Rapids-to-Chicago Pere MarquetteThe first train departs at 7:40 a.m. on October 27.

Named in honor of the former U.S. Congressman, the station will integrate bus and rail transportation, offer more passenger amenities, and streamline train operations.

The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening with a special ceremony that includes speeches from U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, and officials from MDOT, Amtrak, and The Rapid.  It all starts at 10:00 a.m.  Light refreshments will be available.
