GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.,--  As people around the country recognized Veterans Day this week, an auto detailing shop in Grand Rapids chose a unique way to show their gratitude.

For the first time, Great Lakes Chemical decided to hold a "military makeover" contest to give back to a West Michigan veteran. The prize, an appearance protection package valued over $2,000 dollars, was given away on Veterans Day.

"This is just a small prize that we can actually give to a special veteran that put their life on the line," explained Terry Heckman, the General Manager of Great Lakes Chemical. "We're going full wet sand on the outside, full interior ultimate reconditioning,  like 'to the nines' on this."

More than 200 names were submitted for the drawing. Many came from a recent partnership Heckman has formed with the Flyin' Heroes, a local non-profit that takes veterans on free guided fly fishing along the Pere Marquette,  Muskegon and White Rivers. Heckman also decided to sponsor the group, donating appearance packages for both of the vehicles used for transportation on the trips.

"It's great to see any support for veterans, especially from down home companies like this that really want to help out," said Adam Schumaker, a retired Navy veteran and the Vice President of the Flyin' Heroes.

Brian West was selected as the lucky winner of the "military makeover". The retired Muskegon area veteran has served 25 years between the Army and Army National Guard. He told FOX 17 he's "humbled" and "excited" to be chosen for the big prize.

Heckman plans to continue the contest next year. He's also offering a special to all veterans the rest of the month: 25% off any detailing service in November.
