WMU wins fifth straight, blows out EMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan set the tone right from the start.

Darius Phillips returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Zach Terrell scored five total touchdowns as WMU trounced Eastern Michigan at Waldo Stadium, 51-7 on Saturday. It’s the fifth straight win for the Broncos (7-3, 5-1).

Terrell, the Mid-American Conference’s most efficient quarterback, completed 17 of 19 passes for 357 yards and four scores. He ran for another as Western Michigan rolled up 400+ yards of offense in the first half. The Broncos led 48-0 at the break.

Corey Davis hit the 1,000 mark on the season with a four-catch, 134-yard performance, including a 54-yard touchdown grab. Daniel Braverman had two touchdown catches.

Jarvion Franklin carried just five times for 26 yards before leaving with an ankle injury in the first half. The injury is not considered to be serious. He also scored a 54-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Terrell before leaving. Dareyon Chance led WMU with 53 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Ronald Zamort and Deontae Brown had interceptions for the Broncos.

Western Michigan hits the road for the final time in the 2014 regular season next Saturday, heading to Central Michigan (7-4, 5-2 MAC) for a major MAC West showdown. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
