OTSEGO, Mich.–Ski season is beginning early in West Michigan, but one resort beat the rest to the punch.

“Eight months of waiting for Christmas day and this is our Christmas day basically,” said Victor Gayheart, general manager at Bittersweet Ski Resort.

Sunday marked the third earliest opening day in the history of Bittersweet Ski Resort and hundreds of visitors took advantage.

“Mid 20’s at night and right around freezing during the day, we go for it,” said Gayheart.

Charlie Vandermark is one of the die-hards who hopes to be one of the first down the slopes each year.

“I really like their snow making,” Vandermark said. “It’s great and everyone who works here is awesome.”

He’s been snowboarding at the resort for five years, but says every year is a learning experience.

“I’ve had a few falls today.”

The 14-year-old hopes to keep learning, not only as a snowboarder, but maybe even as a future employee of Bittersweet.

“I’d like to design the rails and stuff that get out on the slopes.”
