GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- If you saw bare pavement Tuesday morning, you weren't driving in West Michigan.

Roads of all kinds were snow covered after lake effect snow piled up overnight.

Before the morning commute got started, a semi jackknifed on eastbound I-196 at M-40 in Holland, blocking both lanes for more than an hour, but it was cleared before traffic got heavy.

As you might expect, many drivers found themselves in snow drifts and ditches along highways and country roads. Ramps were particularly tricky.

Between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., three different expressway closures popped up: southbound I-196 after the Saugatuck exit, eastbound I-94 at Helmer Road (two semis rolled), and southbound US-131 at M-82 Edmore.
