GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In the most recent instance of what police are calling a significant increase in heroin overdoses within Grand Rapids, a woman lost consciousness while driving and crashed into a parked car.

Police say that at around midnight on Wednesday morning, the 21-year-old woman was driving near Fulton and Sheldon, when she smashed into a parked car.   Both vehicles were totaled. Upon further investigation, officers determined the driver had lost consciousness due to a heroin overdose.  Prior to striking the car, she also narrowly missed two pedestrians.

Police ticketed the suspect, who did not receive any serious injuries as a result of the overdose or the crash.

According to a lieutenant with the Grand Rapids Police Department, the city has seen a significant increase in heroin overdoses over the past several weeks, some of which have proven deadly.
