GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Two decades after his death, family and dozens of law enforcement honored the life and memory of Officer Scott Flahive.
Flahive was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 13, 1994, the first officer ever in Ottawa County to be shot and killed while on the job. He was in the process of pulling a vehicle over which had two jail escapees inside.
“Any time you lose an officer, it’s just a very tragic event and for us to show the family we still remember him 20 years later is really important," said Sgt. Lee Adams.
Several members of Flahive's family were in attendance, presented with flowers to show how much his memory still means to the Grand Haven community.
“Officer Flahive gave his life to protect the citizens of Grand Haven," said an end of watch dispatch broadcasted for Officer Flahive Saturday.
“Scott you will never be forgotten, you are our hero, Ottawa central dispatch is clear, 13-11”
The anniversary also marked the "kick off" of a fundraising effort to raise $10,000 by spring 2015 to build a fallen officer memorial marker at the Grand Haven Public Safety Department.
