HOLLAND, Mich. — A teenager was arraigned Friday afternoon in Holland District Court on charges related to assaulting a man with baseball bats earlier this month.

Valdemar Beltran III, 17, was charged Friday with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. He is being held at the Ottawa County jail on $100,000 cash bond.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Beltran is a suspect in a felonious assault that occurred at 11:20 p.m. March 2 in the 13000 block of Duncan Street in Holland Township. Police say Beltran beat a 44-year-old Holland Township man in his home.

They say the victim had contact with two suspects on Craigslist and picked them up in Holland, that the deal involved the transfer of drugs, that the victim drove the pair to his home, that an argument ensued and that they produced baseball bats and assaulted the victim.

Police say the victim’s roommate overheard the argument and called central dispatch. The victim drove himself to Holland Community Hospital and suffered severe injuries to his hands and several lacerations to his head. All the injuries were non-life-threatening.

Beltran had been considered a suspect and was located on Clearview Drive where he was staying with a girlfriend when he was arrested earlier Friday.

His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
