Byron Center student killed in crash Friday evening identified

BYRON CENTER, Mich. — A Senior at Byron Center High School was killed and another student injured in a crash that happened late Friday.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred near the intersection of Wilson Ave. SW & 92nd Ave SW.

Victoria Garraus, a 17-year-old Senior at Byron Center High School, was driving southbound on Wilson Ave when she lost control of her vehicle and struck a tree.  She was later pronounced deceased.

Her passenger, Cayla Dyer, an 18-year-old senior at the High School, reportedly suffered from facial lacerations and a fractured leg.

The principal of Byron Center High School, Scott Joseph, released a statement to the community Saturday morning:

“Dear Students,
It is with great sadness that I bring to you news of losing one of our Byron Center High School students. Victoria Garraus, senior, passed away tonight as she lost control of her car on Wilson and 92nd street. Passenger Cayla Dyer, also a senior, was treated at the hospital and released with minor injuries. Victoria was a part of the Artist Community and an active member in various areas of the arts at BCHS.

The families of Cayla and Victoria ask that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers, but to allow them time and space to mourn and work through this tragedy.

On Monday, counselors will be available to work through supporting any of you who need support through this loss.
