ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — The mayor of Rochester Hills isn’t happy with the way Madonna voiced her opinion about her hometown.

In a March 11 interview with Howard Stern, the Michigan native referred to Rochester Hills as”simple minded and full of provincial thinkers.”

Mayor Bryan Barnett responded today with an open letter touting the city’s achievements and said it’s quite different than the place she grew up in.

“I don’t know if I’ll change her mind,” Barrett said. “But I want those who have read her remarks to know that’s not what we’re about here in Rochester Hills.”

It’s not the first time Madonna hit a nerve with Michiganders. In 1987, she called her birthplace of Bay City, Michigan, “a little smelly town in northern Michigan.”
