Montcalm County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating an accident involving an Amish horse and buggy that veered into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.

It happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Fitzner Road between Spencer Road and Pakes Road in Montcalm Township.

Deputies say the crash caused severe damage to both the buggy and the truck. The driver of the buggy, Andrew Miller, 27, of Montcalm Township, was airlifted to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, and his horse died from its injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Deputies believe that the horse tack may have been incorrectly connected, causing the horse to veer into the northbound lane when the buggy driver attempted to stop the buggy.
