GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —  The Kent ISD School  Board is one step closer to naming its next superintendent.

A press release Thursday noted that the field has been narrowed to two candidates. The finalists are Ron Caniff, superintendent of the Grandville Public Schools, and Tom Martin, superintendent of the West Ottawa Public Schools.

In June,  Caniff will celebrate 12 years at Grandville.   He was also the superintendent at Lapeer Public Schools, an assistant superintendent in Northview and principal at Forest Hills Central High School. He has a specialist in education degree from Central Michigan University, a master’s degree in education from Grand Valley State University and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University.

Before taking the job at West Ottawa in 2011, Martin worked as the superintendent at the Kenowa Hills and Hopkins public schools. He was also principal, assistant principal and athletic director in the Ionia, Forest Hills and Otsego districts. Martin earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Michigan University and bachelor’s degrees in secondary education and physical education from Calvin College and Cornerstone University.

Interviews will continue March 31, according to officials.

Current Kent ISD superintendent Kevin Konarska will retire June 30.
