Ice melting on the Great Lakes

MICHIGAN– Spring time temperatures are hard at work melting ice on the Great Lakes. The total ice cover on the lakes is down to 53%.  With forecast highs in the 40’s and 50’s for the last week of March the lakes will continue to warm and melt the ice.

The map below shows the latest ice analysis from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. The grey depicts ice still on the lakes. The highest ice concentrations are in the areas highlighted in black. Lake Michigan is primarily in the blue which represents water temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s. Ice Cover
